Carefully interview prospective rad/onc physicians, make sure you're on the same page before allowing him/her to begin treatment. Never stop asking questions and do your homework and research your type of cancer, and the facility where your treatment will be administered. Don't take it for granted that your doctor is up on the latest treatments available.

Biography

Hello from vacationland. I was diagnosed Dec06 with invasive squamous cell CA of the anal canal SII TII. My treatment consisted of 34 grueling and barbaric radiation treatments along with 2 rounds of 5fu/mitomycin c. I am 15 months cancer free, YIPEE! Unfortunately I have progressive and permanent damage due to the radiation I received, that said I feel blessed as I continue to remain free from this beast called cancer. Trying to connect with others who have the same or similar extremely rare cancer within my state has proven to be a lesson in futility. I have learned so much during my journey and I am willing to share all I learned with others just setting off on their journey through cancer treatment and recovery. Lily

Hi Lily!

I saw your comment on Julie’s blog and thought to myself how long it had been since hearing anything from you. I hope you are doing well! As for me, I am approaching 20 months post-tx and so far, so good. I have a PET scan and colonoscopy coming up soon and will be anxious prior to those. I have come to realize that that is my life now—the things we have to get used to with this crappy disease! But I don’t have any complaints, am glad to be here and trying to make the most of every day. Stay well and know that I think of you often.

Hugs—
Martha

Hi Lily,
Thanks for your comment! I agree with you completely :)

My new motto is:

Nemo Me Impune Lacessit!
(translation: No one treads on me with impunity)

By the way my friend Kim who died this morning got lost in the cracks at Sloan Kettering as he was a nice gentle trusting man, who just trusted the docs and never wanted to be a bother. Meanwhile he didn’t start treatment until it was too late.

God bless you,
Carpe Diem,

Jacques

Hey Lilly,
I wanted to thank you for adding to the Tools for the Journey list. You mentioned many great things that will help so many. Thank you. Hope you are feeling well today.
best to you, Nova

Thank you for your comment lily.

prayers, love and hugs for you

I am so grateful our paths crossed as you extend yourself in support of what I am about to face. Thank you so much for offering me suggestions on what will help the radiation burns. I will do whatever I can to make this as easy as possible on myself. Thank you, Frank

Lily—
Thank you so much for your kind words after reading my post about all the emotions I have experienced lately. It’s just been almost too much, but it really helps to know that others understand. I am sorry for the pain you have had to endure—you’ve been through a lot. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you so much for your support!

Martha

Lily the above post will seem odd. I copied it from Martha mp327 as she mentioned your name as one she was talking to. I saw that she did not know how to post to you so I took it upon myself to send her words to you but it shows my name. Sorry for that but I thought you might want to look up her bio and become a supporter for her too. I think she wants to talk to all those who have a specific cancer such as yourself.
Take care. Sorry for the confusion.

Weezie

Hi Everyone—
I am feeling a bit distressed right now, as there have been two new members join this forum recently, both diagnosed with anal cancer. Their intros have appeared in the last day or two. This is an all too vivid reminder that this cancer is on the increase. I am asking that those of us in this unfortunate club bond together through this forum to help each other. Some of us are done with treatment and are in the every 3-month follow-up mode. Some of us have begun or are about to begin treatment. I feel compelled to use my experience with my diagnosis, treatment and follow-up to help others whose journey is just beginning. This is a long, tough road to go down and support means so very much. I believe we can be of tremendous help to one another.

Fifi—I hope you will continue to post, updating us on your progress.

Pita—If you should read this post, please go to your blog and do an initial post by clicking on “add post”. This will allow others to respond to you (until you post, we can not comment).

Kim & Lily—Your input and support has been so important to me, and now I ask that you pass on your knowledge and wisdom to those who are taking those first steps in this fight.

Kathy—You are a success story and we all need to hear more of that! Please keep updating us on your progress—may you continue to move forward!

If I have left anyone out, please forgive me. Everyone in our little club contributes so much. Let’s all keep supporting each other, especially those who are new to the group. Sorry if I sound too “preachy,” but I am determined to not let anyone go through this alone.

Hugs to you all—Martha
