Comments:

I was diagnosed with melanoma May 2006. The disease was never found on my skin. It was already in my lymph nodes and was classified stage 4 then. After lymph dissection, I started a year on interferon, which was tough especially the first month. Then, I was “clean” for about a year before a scan showed a lesion on my left kidney. This occurred about May 2007. At this time I was approved for a clinical trial with impilimumba (now Yervoy). This treatment was not really that toxic and limited the tumors growth and prevented spreading. However, by January 2011, the tumor was large enough my oncologist recommended emboilizing the tumor. This procedure works to cut off the blood supply to the tumor.
This brings you up to where I currently am.
On editorial comment. I don’t like the motto ” cancer sucks”. For me it has provided it’s difficulties, but with love and support from my family, friends, and medical caregivers I have dealt with it well enough not to curse the disease. George Karl referred to his dealings with cancer as a journey. I agree with this characterization. Journeys always seem to provide the unexpected. Who can curse that?
