BiographyI am a 42 year old woman, wife of 21 years & mother of two amazing teenagers. I had an emergency appendectomy 12/27/07 and received a phone call from surgeon 1/2/08 with the news… I was informed that I had cancer…carcinoid tumor (goblet cell)that originated in my appendix. The cancer was not just confined to the tumor…it was found in the adipose tissue and was working its way around. In February 2008, I had a right hemicolectomy (2 feet of large intestine removed)& 14 lymph nodes removed…all of which came back negative (thank the good Lord!). I have been to many doctors & several oncologists…I finally found one in San Francisco that had actually treated a couple patients with this type of cancer. It is a rare cancer… The debate was to treat with chemo or not? I have had just about every scan out there, along with countless blood draws. The final decision was to start “aggressive observation”...I have CT scans & bloodwork done every 3 months for the next two years. If at anytime there are any signs of the cancer being back we will proceed with chemo. This whole cancer thing just seems surreal. I am just looking to connect with others that are going through similar issues. It is comforting to know that I am not in this fight alone. While my husband and children are a great support for me…they don’t fully understand the emotional aspect that goes along with cancer. Hi Monica,
Thank you for your good thoughts as I move forward with chemo and rad. I really appreciate your support! So far, I’ve made it through the first two weeks with a few side effects – nausea, dry mouth, starting to get a sore throat. I can’t wait to finish up treatment! :) I hope you’re doing well. Take good care.
Thank you for the comment, Monica… I’m so excited I found this site. It’s exciting to know we are not alone

Hi Monica,
Thank you for the kind comment and nice welcome! It does feel like a family here….such warm, friendly folks! It is unfortunate indeed the circumstances that brought us together, however, as you mentioned it’s great to find comfort with others who are in the same boat.
I can relate very much to the comment in your bio that this cancer thing is surreal…that’s how I’ve described it to my family and friends.
I hope you’re doing well…..
Hugs back at ya!
Best Regards,
Kim
Monica,
Thank you for your comment – although I am in the midst of chemo so in that sense we are at different points, I understand the emotional aspects of this diagnosis, and also that although I am surrounded by love and support, no one knows what “this” feels like. If you ever want to email me, please do—ohmama123@hotmail.com. You can vent away and scream or cry your emotions into print! I am happy to listen :)
Wishing you continued health—Kristin
