Danean's Profile Page

Biography

My name is Danean (rhymes with "machine") and I was diagnosed with rectal adenocarcinoma in August of 2009 at the ripe old age of 41. I had a trans-anal resection October 5th, radiation five days a week for five and a half weeks from November 16th through January 5th, and took Xeloda until my platelet count fell so low that my oncologist made me stop taking it. My advice to all who will listen: If you are over 50 - get a colonoscopy. If you are under 50 and have blood on your toilet paper, *please* don't assume it's hemorrhoids - get a colonoscopy. If something's wrong, believe me, you want to know as soon as possible. This type of cancer is highly treatable when detected early.

Cancer Symptoms

Rectal bleeding that my gynocologist said was "probably hemorrhoids," lower back ache, occasional diarrhea.

Surgery Description, Dates & Side Effects

Transanal resection October, 2009.

Radiation or Proton Therapy Description, Dates & Side Effects

Xeloda (oral chemo) for two and a half weeks.
Merry. Christmas, Danean. How are you doing since having your eye surgery. I am thinking of you and praying for a speedy recovery. Love, Cherie
Danean! Am posting this on both you pages to make sure you see it! Keep calm sweetie and breathe!! Danean I hate the fact that you are being checked and worried about a brain tumour on to =p of all you have beeen through! You probably remember me being frantic with mt 2 diagnosis for an ependymoma and a pituitary tumour! I still carry the fear that they can grow or go malignant but they are watching me closely as they are to small to do any kind of surgery on safly and are still benign! I have an MRI every 6 months for these and am scheduled here again in January for my next one.So far so good, but they keep me under close watch because Tonsil cancer can spread easily to the brain and could turn these malignant, also my mom dies from brain cancer. I have a great neuro surgeon who has really helped to put my mind at ease. He said that 1 in 4 people have a brain tumour that they never knew about all their lives, because most of these are benign and never move ofr change. My 2 tumours are not considered a huge thing but I am glad I know about them and that I am being watched so closely! Ihope this helps ease your mind . I will be praying that there is nothing signifigant there, except your healthy wonderful caring brain! Breathe Girl! Hugs valxoxoxoxo
Rats I am so far behind with stuff I did not, thanks for the reminder!!!
You are right that it is expensive...but then, not more than going out to dinner a couple of times...so I'll give it a try..need to figure out how to get the ad on BFAC so Jill can benefit!
Dear Danean, hope you are well. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. SO TIRED. I have my chemo again tomorrow-five more hook-ups to go. I had a sinus, ear infection this past week and now I am on an anti-biotic. I usually get to go to church every other Sunday but did not make it today. I had a CT/Pet scan two weeks ago and an enlarged lymph node showed up in my right breast. My oncologist is not concerned about it at this time. But I will go see my breast surgeon as soon as I can but I am so tired of keeping up on my TWO cancers. But God has a plan, He is with me, loving me, guiding me, comforting me. God Bless You, Elizabeth
Thank you Danean for pointing him out I just read his post and will definatly reply to him> By the way I had thought I had added you as a friend way back I am so sorry I hadn't, just noticed it! I hope you know you are my friend dear gal!!! Hugs Val
Hi Danean; I have been too sick to go see her, unfortunately, and my daughter says she is too tired being up half the night breast feeding. Got to love this disease!?! How are you doing? Love Barb
Hi Danean; Thank you for your support. It is greatly appreciated. If I can help in anyway, let me know. Love Barb
is this the right you ...LOL
Hi Danean, Have been thinking about you lately. How are you? How were the holidays and your birthday? One of these days we need to meet for lunch or something. Take care, Cherie
Happy, Happy Birthday tomorrow, Danean! I hope you have a special day that's as special as you are! I wish you many, many more happy birthdays! Hugs-- Martha
Hope you have a great birthday!!! xoxo
OOPS! haha. 21236 Thanks ') xoxo
hahaha! actually, mw is a huge fan of old time stuff, I would love to gift him something for Christmas that he won't be expecting...I checked out your site...he will love a lot. maybe we can arrange a barter...radio show for a bracelet?? xoxoxoxzoxoxxxzozo!
Absolutely, I am always looking for good material. The book is mostly going to be about my own experiences, but I prefer to look at things from the funny side of life as you know ;) My address is ssaaty21236 @ hotmaildot com. Thanks so so much! xoxo
Hi Danean, What was the pep talk that your doctor gave you about bleeding? My doctor in the past has said it is probably because the radiation has thinned the skin and blood vessels are near the surface. But, it was also a symptom of the anal cancer, so it always worries me. Lately, I have had blood when I wipe and on my stool several times a week (and I have in the past, too). Anyway, I hope that you are doing well. Cherie
I've not been to Yosemite, PLEASE post them!
Daneen....I am so sorry to read about your bad days. I have problems from the pelvic radiation and the chemo, but no surgery like yours. I admire your strength. Post every now and then and tell us how you are, even if you are not so well...this disease gets you and then the treatment knocks you out and then the long-term recovery is hard too. A triple whammy. Here's another hug. HM
PS - I hope you are well and long-term effects of the treatment are under control...a big hug.
Hi Danean, yep it's a RAV4...one of the earliest ever made, a 96 stick shift, drove it in Spain and Argentina. Still in great shape and only 96K miles! I hope to outlast it but I'll have to stay in good condition!
Hi Danean! Thank you for the early birthday wishes. How are you doing?
Thank you for the birthday wishes Danean. Every little comment no matter how big or little means so much, I need to take a little more time doing more of the same. Hope all is well with you. Thanks again, Hugs and prayers. Greg
Hi Danean - How are you doing these days? Hope you had a nice holiday and the New Year is treating you well. I am so saddened by Theresa's passing. It is such a loss. Keep in touch when you can. God Bless. Cherie
Hi Danean! Thanks for taking me along on your vacation again! :) You are too sweet! I hope you are doing well. As always, it's great to hear from you! Hugs-- Martha
Hey, thanks for the nice compliment! How have you been? I hope you've got some comfort from the pain' I am feeling a little more like myself finally. Take care! xoxo
hi.. nice to meet you. regarding your question to about swollen legs... do legs up the wall pose (Viparita Karani.. you can find it on the yoga journal website) and be try to keep from sitting in one position for too long .. it just takes time I think... i had it for a good 4 or 5 months... good luck to you:)
Thanks! I needed that, here's to a healthy new year!!
Hey Danean...thanks for your message...yes I was the one with the swollen ankle and calf... I went to a registered masage therapist who performed MLD (manual lymphatic drainage)...this is a form of massage focusing on the lymph nodes...I went for about 6 treatments and for awhile I wore a compression stocking (not very attractive)!..however, I have to say that after that 6 week period my leg and ankle pretty much returned to normal...it may be a bit bigger than the right but not really caring about that...it feels better as well...so you may want to look into and RMT who performs MLD...it may help...perhaps in my case it was coincidence, perhaps not...it may be worth checking out... in the meatime I am more worried about Bob! LOL! Good luck and keep me updated All the best in 2011! d xo
Thanks for the hug/prayer/punch!!! Sometimes you just need someone else to fight a bit for you. Blessings to you and your family
Dear Danean, Thank you for your kind thoughts. I'm really doing ok and will just take one day at a time. Peace, Theresa
Thanks Danean! Your prayers are so welcomed and needed! Look for a post on my side later on regarding prayer! Love and hugs! Melissa B
I think if you want to delete something, you have to ask Blogforacure aka jill to remove it for you. Don't worry about it. If he's a creep, he should know we're on to him!! xoxo
hey, I don' know if I explained,,,the turtle is a little girl, we were driving down the main neighborhood street and my boyfriend looked in the rearview mirror and saw that little head pop out! He thought it was a rock and avoided it! He screeched a u-turn, ran into the traffic, almost got himself and the turtle squished, took her down to the creek by our house. Thanks for the 'like'! xoxo
Thanks for your support of my efforts, Daneen. I love the photos of your cats.

Your are full of all kinds of good tips. I took a closer look at the designs for the coffee mugs and sure enough they had a longer version where you had to post the design twice in the one image. Thanks so much for that!!! I just order some test swag. I want to make sure the printing is clear enough before I open the store. I had tried to order some bumper stickers a while back but they were too blurry. I think I have it right this time but want to see a couple products to know forsure. Happy Sunday.
oh good glad you said that. I am going to do a CafePress shop and was hoping they were good quality and good customer service. So good to know. Sweet. Thanks!
Hi Danean - Thank you for your comments and re-sending me your phone number. You are so sweet. My appt. with the surgeon is now set up for Monday, 10/25 at 3:30. I sure hope that everyone is right and that this is nothing out of the ordinary. How are you doing? We haven't talked in awhile. Cherie
Thank you, Danean--you are so sweet! Martha
Hi Danean! Thank you so much for the birthday wishes! I had a very nice celebration. I hope you are doing well! Hugs-- Martha
Thanks for checking on me! I have been busy with helping my mom with our add on. It is a shop for my dad and a studio for my mom. I got an appointment with my new oncologist on October 7th, she is a GI oncologist from MD Anderson. I am happy to have a female as I think she will be able to understand some of the problems I have:). I met my new urologist yesterday, I do not have to see him until next year as long as I do not have any out of the ordinary problems. He is nice and knowledable about ostomates and our problems. I see my new GI on the 6th, oh and I go on Thursday to get my right breast diagnostics done... S o I am getting everything worked out. I went and worked out three days ago and started bleeding, I guess I did too much followed by working in the studio. It is frustrating realizing the limitations I am left with:). Thanks for any and all prayers...I am out of my sleeping meds and I am going on my 6th night without a refill...doctor nurse messed up my refill twice. Hopefully I will get it tomorrow. Take care, Melinda
Thank you for the comment about Konsyl and itching..I'm going to google that, don't think I know what it is... I hope you are doing well and here's a hug.
Hi Danean! Thank you so much for thinking of me! Yes, my party was so much fun last night. I came home with 4 bouquets of flowers, a beautiful crystal flower, T-shirts and some tequila! One of the guys even brought me some Alaskan salmon and my husband some sausage and smoked pork chops! We have some great friends. I think everyone had a great time--I know I did! I hope you are doing well and enjoying a good Sunday. It's been lazy here, I think we partied too hard! Hope you have a great week! Martha
Hi Danean, I just saw your note on Helen's picture of the high desert. Anza Borrego is one of my favorite parts of the world. My husband, Michael, and I camping there in the winter many years ago. It had rained, so the cactus flowers were in bloom. We followed around some tarantulas; they were fascinating to watch. We've been here on the right coast since 1980, but Michael is a Las Vegas native, I am a Californian -- grew up in the Bay Area and Torrance, we met at UCLA. Thanks for the lovely memory. Andrea
Hi Danean - What a small world! How did you realize that Rose was the same woman that works for Dr. Anh? I hope all works out for you with the UCI pain clinic. I am wishing you the best and pain free days ahead! God bless you and keep in touch and let me know how it goes. Cherie
I never thought about the hip pain until you just said something about it on Martha's blog. I had major pelvic radiation and I do have a lot of pain in my left hip region. I just had a bone density test and that was all clear at this time. I wonder if it is how they manipulate our bodies during the surgery. I told my mom if only I could pop my hip (this was something I could do pre-surgery when stretching out), now I can barely get my back to pop and it is very painful and then such relief comes about. today I was in the pool for the first time I found that being able to stretch my legs I felt a little better but the pain is still present. It has been almost two years since surgery and year since radiation. I think our bodies just have crazy things wrong with them due to the types of trauma they were exposed to, in order to get the cancer out! Melinda
thanks for the prayers, Danean. God bless you! Karen (kknola)
Thanks Danean. If you want to send something private, there is a small box above the comment box that you "X". Next to the box it says: Make comment private (will only show up to owner and you, if you are a registered user.) My email address is: cherieporopatich @ cox . net But, with no spaces between. Take care - Cherie
Hi Danean, Thanks again for the new information about Dr. Stamos and HMO's. If my radiation and chemo treatment didn't work (pet scan shows it did work, anuscope shows something suspicious, waiting to see another colo surgeon for 2nd opinion exam) then they said I will have to have surgery and that will result in a colostomy. Since my cancer was anal cancer, I don't think they can save the anal sphincter in the case of surgery. But, it wouldn't hurt for me to check it out, if I need to. I praying that I DON'T need to have surgery and that I am completely cancer free. Take care - Cherie
Hi Danean - Thank you for the information. That was so sweet of you to ask your doctor to explain the surgery to you so that you could explain it to me. He sounds like a great doctor, but because I am in an HMO, I have to use the doctors that they choose. But, if ever needed perhaps I could get my doctor to consult with Dr. Stamos. Hope you are doing well. You are so lucky that you had your cancer surgically removed and it didn't affect your sphincter. Have a great weekend. Cherie
Hi Denean - Yes, I am the one who asked you about the trans rectal surgery. Thanks - Cherie
You said it! I also totally agree with listening to your body and pushing for a thorough exam and accurate diagnosis. Although I wouldn't wish this on anyone else, it is really comforting to know that I'm not the only 41 year old going through this. The friends in this forum are absolutely fantastic- I hadn't anticipated the amount of support they would provide for me. I'm glad it sounds like maybe you're out of the woods for now- I wish you all good follow-up tests, and improving health. Glad you're here! Kim
Hi Danean....so sorry to hear aobut your ordeal, we can all relate...i totally remember the broken glass feeling and now today I am thankful that I can actually have a bowel movement with no pain...in fact now I look forward to them in a sense....its the little things we come to appreciate... it sounds like you are on the mend...and you certainly have come to the right place...we are like a cyber family full of love, support and yes laughter which are all key elements in getting through this... I am now 4 months post treatment and feeling really good and almost ready to start dating again...my nether regions (affectionately named big jim and the twins) are speaking to me again which for me is a good sign considering they were totally bbq'd back in feb... Take baby steps ....! Be well my friend! d
Welcome to the community:). Did your doctor ignore your symptoms? Mine did and it took almost 6 months to the day to get diagnosed. I agree with what you said about the age and blood:) Melinda
Hi Deanean, So glad you found this community. As you will see, it is such a supportive group of people. Since we have all been through similar stuff, we probably are some of the few who can really sympatheize with you. I'm glad that you are now on the road to recovery. It may be a long road but there is a pot of rainbow at the end. Please come here when you need help navigating... or just to pop in for a visit. welcome, Nova
Hi Danean-- I'm sorry we have to meet under these circumstances, but am glad you have found your way to this forum. There are so many great people here who will give you their support. I am in total agreement with you when it comes to getting colonoscopies and also NEVER, EVER assuming that blood on the TP means bleeding hemorrhoids. I was initially misdiagnosed with those, only to find out about a week later that I had anal cancer. It was quite a shock. You are young and I'm so sorry you are having to experience this. I hope that your age will benefit you, in that you are stronger than someone my age--56. I look forward to hearing more from you. I hope you are doing well and that your good health will return. Take good care. Martha
Sorry to meet you under these circumstances. Thanks for being part of this community. We can support each other and help educate so hopefully other people. Sounds like you're done with treatment. Let us know how you're doing. Warmly, Theresa
